World Tourism Day in Uganda
World Tourism Day in Uganda is one of the most celebrated day in the country by the tourism sector. However, it is celebrated worldwide by the UN and other countries every 27 September.
Every year on September 27 since 1980, the United World Tourism Organization celebrates World Tourism Day to recognize tourism’s power to drive economic growth, cultural exchange and sustainable development.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) established this day in 1980 to spotlight tourism’s global impact and potential.
In 2025, the theme is “Tourism and sustainable Transformation” which calls for bold action to reshape tourism into a force that uplifts communities and protects the planet.
History behind the World Tourism Day in Uganda by the UN
A Nigerian National, The late Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi, is the one who suggested 27 September as a date to be laid aside for the celebration of the World Tourism day.
This date was suggested by him in 1970 since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day as international observation on September 27.
Blue still remains the color of the World Tourism Day. The primary objective of the World Tourism Day, is to bring out the importance of Tourism on a global scale.
Tourism plays a big role on the social, political and the cultural environmental impact onto the country besides its economic impact.
By celebrating this day, it shows to people that tourism is not only about revenue growth, but also social connections, sustainable practices and cultural diversities via bringing people from different places together.
Since the World Tourism Day in Uganda is celebrated from different Districts every year, it has caused awareness of the tourism products in those Districts.
Every year when they visit a district during the World Tourism Day in Uganda, 3-5 different activities are carried out by every participant at a free cost or very reduced cost in that District thus enabling the youth to love and embrace their country.

Uganda’s 2025 celebration highlights
Uganda’s Ministry of Tourism, wildlife and Antiquities launched the festivities under the theme, “Tourism and sustainable Transformation.” Every year a city is chosen for the national celebration of the World tourism day and display its untapped tourism potential.
2023 the celebrations was in Kyegegwa town. Bringing forth the chimpanzees in Kibale National park being the primate capital of the World.

2024 in Kasese District and this year, the amazing celebration took place in Arua city in West Nile region.
People were in position to explore places like Mt. Wati, Ajai wildlife reserve, River Nile, Cultural heritage of the Lugbara, Madi, Alur and the Kakwa communities.
It was a day filled only with positive vibes. There is always like four Uganda Wildlife Authority buses that do give free back and forth transportation of people from Kampala to the celebration site.
The celebrations start as soon as people enter the bus, others come with music robots so as to keep that vibrant mood until they reach the final destination. Photography remains the agenda of the day with very jolly and passionate wildlife individuals.

The different four regions in Uganda
World Tourism Day in Uganda remains a very great day in the tourism sector. The day is not only about exploring the place rather than bringing harmony in the country. Uganda has four different regions to talk of central region, Eastern region, Northern region and western region. There is also an element of Southwestern region.
Western region owns 80% of the country’s beauty and protected areas. Out of the 10 national parks in the country, 8 of them is found in the western region though some parts of Murchison falls National park is also in the Northern region. It is also known as the land of milk and honey.

World tourism day in Uganda enables people to explore all the regions in the country. Since every year, a different district from a different region is selected for the celebration.
This has enabled to change the mindset of the citizens and make them to embrace all the regions in the country. Every region has its own uniqueness, which is brought out during the world tourism day in Uganda.
There is education and youth engagement during World tourism day rally. Different schools are allowed to participant in the wildlife quiz and innovations whereby the best schools are awarded during the celebrations.
World tourism day in Uganda do bring in harmony in the way that, some people still fear tribes like IK, Karamojong, basically the Northern tribes due to their hostile background.
During the World tourism day in Uganda, people from all over the country are able to mingle peaceful and even visit communities. This is done without any harm caused a thing that has changed the mindset of very many citizens. This has given them even more reasons to live and visit those communities.
The event of the day showcases conservation and sustainability awareness which is passed to generations. It also helps in promoting economic balance of different regions.

Tourism potential of Uganda
In Uganda, nature is the niche of the tourism sector having gorillas as the keystone species. However, we are highly rich in culture with about 56 tribes in the country with a very different totem, taboos and ways of living. Places like Northern Uganda is highly rich in culinary with different types of vegetables.
Western Region
Each region in the country has its own niche as far as tourism is concerned. Western region, a land of milk and honey. It does not mean other regions do not have milk, rather the best milk is from that region. Having Ankole cows as the outstanding cows in the country that offers the best ever milk of higher quality and quantity.
Eastern Region
Eastern region is the part of the country rich in culture such as kadodi, Imbalu, history of female mutilation and is the place with the largest caldera in the world.

Northern Region
If you want to see the real dark and golden melanin, a place flowing with shear nut oil and simsim paste, with a variety of vegetables. It is the place with the most joyous African traditional dance called Lara karaka. It is a place crossed twice by River Nile, the longest river in the world and that’s Northern region. Whoever is interested in the dark tourism, Northern region can be a great place of recommendation.
Central Region
Central region stands out as the biggest region in the country. It is a region of loyalty and to those that want to understand the history of kingdoms, central is the best region for that. The region holds the big offices and the parliament of Uganda. It is the best region for nightlife experience, Rolex experience and religious tourism. The region has the largest Lake in Africa, Lake Victoria and the best region for beach life experience.
